‘Rotary Remembers’ poppy fundraiser enters 8th year

Chelmer Bridge Rotary in Essex are launching their annual ‘Rotary Remembers’ pin badge project ahead of Remembrance Day later this year.

Since the project first trialled in 2016 and launched formally in 2017, Chelmer Bridge Rotary has raised approximately £85,000 for Armed Forces charities.

Each year, the pins have a new design, with the traditional red remembrance poppy and the Rotary Mark of Excellence used to commemorate the sacrifice and lives lost in thw two world wars, and subsequent conflicts.

The pins are priced at £3 each, with all profits – approximately £2 per pin – being donated to the Royal British Legion and Poppyscotland.

Both the Royal British Legion and Poppyscotland provide support for current former members of the Armed Forces and their families, including around the areas of mental health, housing, mobility, the cost of living and more.

“ROTARY’S COMMITMENT TO PEACE includes not only tackling the causes of conflict and assisting those impacted today, but also commemorating the sacrifice previous generations have made.”

This year, the pin commemorates the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, the largest seaborne invasion in history and the beginning of the liberation of Western Europe during the Second World War.

Elsewhere in the world, exceptionally hard-fought battles were also turning the tide of the war. The Battle of Monte Cassino was the bloodiest of the Italian Campaign and in India outnumbered British and Indian forces withstood weeks of siege and brutal fighting at the Battles of Kohima and Imphal.

The pins signify that Rotary Remembers the service and sacrifice of British and Commonwealth armed forces in these and other battles.

Alan Swash from Chelmer Bridge Rotary said, "We're extremely grateful for the support we have received since we launched the project 7 years ago.

Peace is one of the key pillars of our work within Rotary. That includes not only tackling the causes of conflict and assisting those impacted today, but also commemorating the sacrifice previous generations have made.”
