A CELEBRATION OF SERVICE AT ROTARY CONVENTION

The Rotary International Convention, a cornerstone event for Rotary members worldwide, took place in the vibrant city of Singapore at the end of May 2024.

This annual gathering delivered on its promise to be a remarkable convergence of service, fellowship, and inspiration, drawing attendees from every corner of the globe to celebrate the impactful work of Rotary International.

A Global Gathering in a Dynamic City

Singapore, known for its seamless blend of cultures, cutting-edge architecture, and lush greenery, was the perfect backdrop for this year's convention. The city-state's reputation for efficiency and hospitality ensured that attendees experienced a well-organised and welcoming environment.

The convention was held at the iconic Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre, offering world-class facilities and stunning views of the city's skyline. The Marina Bay Sands swimming pool was a particular highlight, living up to its world-class reputation.

Keynote Speakers and Breakout Sessions

The Rotary International Convention is renowned for its impressive lineup of keynote speakers, and 2024 was no exception. Attendees were inspired by global leaders, innovators, and changemakers who embody Rotary's commitment to "Service Above Self." These speakers shared insights on topics ranging from humanitarian efforts and peacebuilding to environmental sustainability and economic development.

In addition to keynote addresses, the convention featured a diverse array of breakout sessions, workshops, and panel discussions. These sessions provided Rotarians with opportunities to deepen their understanding of Rotary’s areas of focus, exchange ideas, and gain practical skills to enhance their club’s impact.

Focus on Breakout Sessions

My friend and colleague, Rotary Coordinator (SAT Lead for Membership) Steve Martin, invited me to join him in presenting a session on "Membership and Public Image."

I was thrilled to be asked, knowing that our message about the importance of vibrant membership paired with a phenomenal public image would resonate with many attendees. We wanted a breakout session which stood out for its vibrant and engaging content.

Our application to Rotary International to present was approved, and we meticulously planned the session to cover our personalities, Rotary backgrounds, and the Rotary Action Plan.

Both Steve and I are avid supporters of the Action Plan and its importance in transforming how Rotary operates. We emphasised that this plan is for all Rotary members, whether they are from Leeds, Liverpool, Lisbon, or Lima.

Of course, there was playful banter about the significance of the Action Plan to our individual disciplines. Steve championed membership, while I argued that the Action Plan was all about public image. After much rehearsal and fine-tuning, we were ready for showtime.

We were granted one of the larger break rooms with a capacity of 750, featuring four huge screens stretched across the rear wall and a stage with an impressive public address system. We were thrilled to have a nearly full house, unofficially achieving the second-highest attendance for a breakout session at the convention.

The response was overwhelmingly positive, and we were grateful for the opportunity to serve our fellow Rotary members with our message.
