Halifax Rotary Club receives

Civic Trust Award

A PANORAMIC viewing platform overlooking the Yorkshire town of Halifax and funded by Rotary has received a prestigious award.

Halifax Civic Trust Awards have been made since 1992 to encourage high-quality design and craftsmanship in schemes in Halifax and the surrounding countryside.

Winning projects have included restored mills, new schools, medical centres and housing - everything from a walled garden to a restored 240-year-old sundial.

This year, the viewing platform on Beacon Hill, built of Yorkshire Stone, won the 2024 award for Halifax Rotary Club.

The viewing platform came out of idea born in 2010 and was accomplished as part of the Rotary club’s centenary in 2022.

It and involved design, fund-raising and liaison with Calderdale Council to showcase the remarkable beauty of Beacon Hill and the modern-day vista of Halifax. The project was completed in May 2023 with five stainless steel panels identifying well-known buildings, monuments and landmarks over a 180-degree panoramic setting.

Besides brief descriptions of all the Halifax and Calderdale landmarks, there is also a QR code at the viewing point for visitors to scan which links to the club’s website for more information.

“THE IDEA WAS BORN IN 2010, AND WAS ACCOMPLISHED AS PART OF THE CLUB’S CENTENARY ON 2022.”

Funding for the viewing platform was made by possible by the Community Foundation for Calderdale, several local businesses, and individual Rotarians.

The name ‘Beacon Hill’ relates to the network of beacons which historically conveyed news around the country, both in times of celebration and crisis. In 1588, the Halifax beacon was one of the series that were used to warn of the Spanish Armada and was on alert status during the Napoleonic wars in the 1790’s to 1815 when it would have warned of invasion.
